SEMANTIC TOOLS FOR CARBON REDUCTION IN URBAN PLANNING Co-funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme Manresa, Spain The Spanish case study will be conducted in the city of Manresa the  capital of the region of Bages, located in the geographic centre of  Catalonia, with  a population of 76 558.    Some redevelopment plans  are currently underway and it is expected  that these will be completed during the lifetime of the project.   This will enable the research conducted to have a direct influence on  the redevelopment currently taking place in Manresa. The selection of  this case study is influenced by the existing, favourable, political  framework, current commitments to sustainable development  objectives and the established energy management data from  numerous municipal installations in MANRESA.  The Objectives in Manresa are: 1.  to exploit the potential of ICT to enable a more  strategic approach to energy management at the  local level;   2.  to build intelligence into the process so that it learns from the results, thus it will become more  effective over time enabling new opportunities for improvements to be identified as part of an ongoing  monitoring and targeting programme for improved energy performance and reduced CO2 emissions. The redevelopment in Manresa will include: The re-modelling of a number of public spaces in the historic centre (specifically in the streets Na  Bastardes, Piques, Fontanet, Plaça Creus, Plaça Pedregar, Dregar,  Joc de la Pilota, Baixada dels  Drets, Sant Andreu, Hospital,  Santa Maria and Òdena) and outside the city centre ( in streets del Sol,  Sol i Aire and Avinguda de l'Esport) new building construction, such as a Civic Centre (Ateneu de les  Bases), a Sports Centre ("El Congost") and an Interpretation Centre for Manresa Medieval.   © Images © Images Visit the blog
